The first Arts Rights Justice (ARJ) Academy will take place in Hildesheim, Germany on 24 – 31 August 2017, followed by the first international ARJ Conference on 31 August to 1 September 2017, both hosted and organised by the UNESCO Chair in Cultural Policy for the Arts in Development at the University of Hildesheim.
The ARJ Academy will be organized as a one-week training and will be a mix of workshops, discussions, presentations, expert insights and other innovative formats. 30 – 40 participants will join international experts and lecturers from the University of Hildesheim. All participants in the ARJ Academy will be upcoming and junior experts in artistic and cultural management practice, cultural policy work, human rights work or related academic areas from all world regions.
The international ARJ Conference will attract around 120 participants and will be held directly at the end of the ARJ Academy. It aims to facilitate connections with institutions and founders active in the field and highlight discourse and required actions. Participants will be representatives of funding and network institutions, senior and junior experts involved in areas relating to art, culture and human rights, as well as ARJ Academy participants from all world regions.
The thematic sessions of the 2017 ARJ Academy and ARJ Conference will focus on:
- Freedom of artistic expression within human rights;
- Artists at risk, threat situations;
- Censorship and policy structures;
- Working with the artists: needs, relocation, protection, visas, funding; and
- Mapping, networking and advocacy (with examples worldwide).
