The potato, a crop of immense global significance, contributes to key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as zero hunger, sustainable agriculture, and economic growth.

Celebrated on May 30th, the International Day of Potato recognizes its vital role in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods worldwide. Originating in the Andes, the potato has sustained civilizations, supported urbanization, and provided food security during conflicts. Today, with over 5,000 varieties, potatoes offer genetic diversity to combat pests, diseases, and climate change.

The Potato Park in Peru preserves indigenous knowledge and genetic resources, while innovative uses of potatoes, such as bio-based products, contribute to sustainability. As the third most consumed food globally, the potato remains a cornerstone of agriculture, with its cultivation spanning 159 countries over 8,000 years.
