UN Tourism Barometer

UN Tourism Barometer

The UN Tourism World Tourism Barometer provides ongoing analysis of short-term tourism trends to inform global tourism stakeholders. Published quarterly, it assesses inbound and outbound tourism data and includes a Confidence Index based on expert surveys.

International tourism rebounded strongly in 2023, reaching 88% of pre-pandemic levels, with the Middle East leading the recovery. Europe, Africa, and the Americas also made significant progress, while Asia and the Pacific showed gradual improvement. Certain subregions exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

Total tourism revenues in 2023 were 95% of 2019 levels, while tourism’s contribution to global GDP remained steady at 3%. Full recovery to pre-pandemic levels are expected in 2024, with a projected 2% growth above 2019 levels. Positive prospects are supported by increased air connectivity and recovery in Asian markets. However, economic and geopolitical challenges remain significant obstacles to sustained recovery and confidence in the tourism sector.
