MA Cultural Policies and Institutions at the International University of Catalonia

The intensive one-year Master´s Degree in Arts and Cultural Management at the International University of Catalonia (UIC) in Barcelona commenced in October 2015. Once again, the UIC invited Dr. Diane Dodd, Executive Director of IGCAT to design and lead a course for international students on the subject of Cultural Policies and Institutions. The 40 hour course, included leading experts from IGCAT’s network including Kris Rampersad, Chair of the Education Committee of UNESCO, Robert Palmer, leading expert in European Capitals of Culture and former Director of Cultural Heritage at the Council of Europe and Caroline Couret, Coordinator of the Creative Tourism Network and IGCAT board member.

The course focused on identifying international, national and local institutional and organisational frameworks for cultural actions. It provided the students with an overview of the political, social, cultural, economical and environmental uses of cultural policy. It introduced policy goals from different public, private and third sector organisations and also analysed the planning process through which cultural policies are adapted to meet objectives and later become projects, programmes and specific actions.

The students are now expected to apply the knowledge they have learned in the development of international cultural projects that they will present to examiners in July.
